Kantha translates to “ rags” in Sanskrit, referring to the reclaimed nature of the vintage fabrics and repurposing methods in which Kantha quilts are created. The unique thing about Kantha is that it is entirely made from re-used cloth; threads removed from it are used to secure the layers together. The border of the sarees that are removed are often re-introduced as stripes which form the borders of the quilt. Essentially a woman’s art, they are made as gifts for family and friends. The work of the Hindu and Muslim women differed in the kind of motifs and the patterns used.
