A town in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, Ilkal  lends its name to the type of sarees woven here. The weaving of these sarees have been said to have started during the 8th century AD and the growth has been attributed to the patronage provided by the local chieftains. The peculiar characteristic of the saree is joining the body warp with the pallu warp which is locally called as TOPE TENI. This technique is only used exclusively at Ilkal

GoCoop, through the initiative of the ‘enabling and empowering cluster-level weaver entrepreneurs’  has identified weavers from this cluster and through capacity building efforts is providing market linkages for sustainable livelihoods.
