Bandhani is a tie and dye method of designing fabric particularly done in the Kutch region of India by the Khatri community. Traditionally the Khatri name became synonymous with “one who dyes fabric". Artistic hand drawn designs on perforated stencils are used on transfer patterns onto fabrics which are pinched and tied with threads into intricate knots before dunking them several times in different colored dye solutions. The threads are then removed to reveal different colors and patterns on the material.
This collection is based on the tying and dyeing art which is an age-old practice. The importance of tying is seen in many cultures, each with its own story. Interestingly, in Kutch, Bandhani is said to have begun with accidently tying a knot. In some cultures people tie threads to make a wish. With this theme, I want to show that while tying is an old tradition, it still holds meaning in the contemporary world. It is the intent of unity. It is the coming together of communities, cultures and Ideas.
