Chettinad in the region of Sivaganga district, south Tamil Nadu, is known for weaving the Chettinad sarees. Also known as Kandaangi sarees, these are woven with cotton in distinctive palette of earthy tones. The body of the sarees often have simple patterns with bold checks, stripes and contrasting, while the pallu is woven with weft stripes. The contrast colour borders together with the horizontal and vertical stripes gives a very striking look.
Usually woven with thick cotton on the pit loom using the fly shuttle technique, Chettinad sarees are suitable for usage throughout the year.
