Karomi launched in 2007 by Sarita Ganeriwala works with over a hundred rural and urban artisans across Bengal to design and create a premium and yet-to-be experienced aesthetic in the Indian handloom sector. It’s committed to propel the handloom sector forward by creating concept handlooms which are a combination of the classic and contemporary. The challenge today is not merely producing quality fabrics but also keeping the craft alive due to the reduced number of skilled weavers. Karomi seamlessly weaves with design innovation and technique using natural fibres - silk, wool, cotton and linen. The yarns are hand-dyed, occasionally with natural dyes. They also work in hand-block printing and kantha embroidery. In recognition of innovation and quality in handloom weaving, Karomi received the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicrafts - Jamdani stoles in 2012 and 2014.
