Amaya Kalita, artisan weaver from Kamrup - Assam, learned the craft of weaving from her mother. Like in many tribal communities, the craft is taught to the daughters of the family from a very young age, so that they could create family heirlooms for their personal use and wedding trousseau. Amaya too learned and created many master pieces for herself & her family, weaving mekhela chador and other traditional assamese attire.
The desire to continue and take forward this knowledge and craft much beyond her home, inspired Amaya to set up Amaya Fab, an artisan enterprise in Oct – 2019. She involved some of her community members and today works with 30 women weavers. She encouraged her son Abhijeet Kalita to study hand looms at IIHT – Guwahati so that he could support her in running her business.
Amaya and her artisan weavers produce contemporary products using the Hand-picked extra weft & the Nangal (Jaala) technique.
